I Should Warn You…

That I don’t know what I am doing.  About blogging, I mean.  I like to write, and this seems to be a good way to hone my skills, get feedback, and generally fulfill a dream of mine.  It is all of that, but the fact remains:  I don’t know how to run a blog.  I am learning, though.  Even this realization is becoming a really exciting project–but more on that tomorrow.  Today, I have to finish my warning.

Since I don’t really know what I am doing:

  • The general layout of my blog probably will change.  In fact, it will probably change soon, and keep changing as I learn how to do the nuts-and-bolts stuff that comes with running one’s own blog.
  • Eventually, I will monetize this blog.  I am not from the beginning because I don’t know how.  It seems important to start now, though.  So, I’m starting.
  • I will be trying out different “voices.”  This could actually be fun.  You all will get to comment and help me decide how serious or funny to be, etc.

So, please, bear with me.  I plan to put a lot of great content on a not-so-great-but-improving format.  Please forgive my learning curve!

A Good Housewife Is….

So, here we are.  You’re reading and I’m writing a blog about all things domestic.  The natural question is, “What is a good housewife anyway?”  This question is best answered in Proverbs 31.   For the record, I am a Christian, but even if you aren’t Proverbs is a good read.  There’s a lot of wisdom in that book.  Sorry for the rabbit trail….back to the post!

A good housewife is:

  • The CEO of her household.  She is in charge of everything that goes on in her household.  She answers to her husband (in this metaphor he would be chairman of the board) and to God, but not necessarily in that order.   She is to oversee the financial matters including, but not limited to, income (her husbands, and any that she can generate) and expenses.  Personally, I think the expenses are especially important in our society.  It is so easy to overspend.  It is important to remember to be a good steward with the riches that God grants.
  • Not lazy.  Proverbs says that she gets up before dawn and sees not only to her family but also to her servants.  This is a trap that I fall into.  I get overwhelmed and go into “lazy mode.”  A good wife is industrious, though.
  • Generous.  Give of your time.  Give of your money.   Give of yourself.  Once your family is taken care of, what use is it to hoard the gifts that God gives you?
  • Supportive of her husband.  I once had a chief that told me that he would have never excelled in the Navy if it weren’t for his wife.  Supportive wives are not just for the military.  Every husband needs to be heard, needs help finding solutions, and needs love.
  • A good mother.  If there are children, they should be raised to be productive citizens in society.  This is not an easy job, but it is worth it.

Frankly, that’s a pretty tall order.  It’s something to strive for, though.  I’ll probably never be a perfect housewife, but I’ll keep trying.  By the grace of God, I’ll get better.

What are some of your ideas of a good housewife?  Have I missed anything here?

Day 1–Welcome to Crazy Town!

Hello world!  Is anyone out there?  My name is Kara.  If you are reading this, then you have found my blog.  Welcome!  I am a thirty-something stay at home mom, a veteran, and a Navy Wife.  My husband, Sailor, and I have one wonderful daughter.  Her name (at least on the blog) is Sunshine.  She is one, and makes life interesting at the White house!  We have two dogs, Jake and Harley.  They really contribute to the craziness around here.

So, why should you read, and why should I write?  My hope for this blog is that it will become a thriving Internet community for discussing all things domestic.  This is what I have come up with so far:

  • You will find articles about housekeeping.  Don’t expect a lot of wisdom here, though.  I am a horrible house-cleaner.  My trouble with clutter is that I really don’t mind it.  So, you all will hold me accountable.  Somehow, it is easier to tell this to a bunch of strangers than to my family or to my closest friends.  I will be posting about decluttering and general cleanliness.  I will also write about any tips and tricks that I encounter.
  • Cooking is a passion of mine.  I love to cook, and I make and adapt most of my own recipies.  So, expect to see a lot of recipies, and stories of my cooking failures too.  It should be fun.
  •  Next year, I plan to have a thriving garden.  Actually, it’s more than a plan.  While he was on R&R, Sailor built me a raised garden bed that I have yet to fill, and next year I will use at least part of it to grow a vegetable garden.  There will be lots of posts about filling up this garden bed.
  • Also, I plan to post about my hobbies, crochet and dog training.  Frankly, though, I don’t know that I will post much on these topics.
  • Finally (at least for now)  I plan to make this blog a case study about how to start a money making blog from scratch.  I am following (at least mostly)  Amy’s plan from bloggingwithamy.com, and would like to demonstrate how long it takes to be successful in a real world time.  I am excited about this project.   With that in mind, expect a lot of changes to the blog itself as I learn about what I am doing.  Changes WILL come because I really don’t have a clue right now.

So, there it is.  My very tentative plan.  I hope that you will continue on this journey with me.  Thank you in advance.

12 Hours ‘Til Launch…

Tomorrow is the official launch of mylifeincrazytown.com!  I’m very excited.  It feels a little like I am talking to an empty room right now, but hopefully that will change soon.  I chose August 15 to launch the blog because I joined the Navy ten years ago on the fifteenth of August.  That was a watershed moment in my life.  So, it seemed serendipitous to launch the blog on this day too.  I’m hoping for another watershed moment.  Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
