I shampooed my area rug last weekend. Fortunately, I had just bought a small carpet cleaner. I was blown away by the price of the carpet shampoo, though. They wanted about a million dollars and my firstborn for a really little bottle of the stuff.
As luck would have it, my friend saved the day. She told me that she used laundry soap in her carpet cleaner, and that it works just fine. I was all on board. I put laundry detergent in the solution tank up to the soap line and then filled it with water. It worked like a dream!
Then I noticed the bottle of carpet shampoo that came with the carpet cleaner.
So, I used it. As I was running out of the carpet cleaner (my area rug is pretty big, and that carpet cleaner drinks shampoo), I noticed that it was a lot thinner than my laundry detergent…and then I spied my all purpose cleaner. I currently have Mr. Clean, but I suspect that all of them would work just fine. Anyway, I tried that too. And I can report that it works like a dream!
So, both laundry soap and all purpose cleaner as carpet shampoo work for me!

Well, I am glad to read this. I will have to try it next time we decide to shampoo the carpets. Did you rent the shampooer from the grocery store?
It really does work. We have a Kirby vacuum that has a shampooer attachment, and I also use it in my Bissel Little Green Cleaner. I tracked back to your blog, and you will be glad to know that the laundry detergent that I used has no scents or other harsh chemicals in it…we have sensitive skin too.
Good info. Thanks.
I’m glad I could help. Thanks for commenting!
pretty cool!
You have just added to my determination to shampoo my carpet and couch already! I’ve been meaning to get around to it for literally years!
I had never cleaned one of the area rugs that I shampooed. It was a little embarassing how much dirt came out of it. Cleaning stuff like that generally gets put last on my list.
